Know Before You Go
Egypt is located in Northeast Africa, with the Sinai Peninsula connecting it to Asia. The bustling capital city, Cairo, is home to more than 20 million people and serves as the cultural and political heart of the country. With a total population of around 110 million, Egypt is the most populous Arab country.
The lifeline of the nation is the Nile River, the longest river in the world, which flows from south to north and gives Egypt its unique division: Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt.
One of the most surprising facts for first-time visitors is that Upper Egypt is in the south, and Lower Egypt is in the north.
That’s because these terms don’t refer to geography on a map, but to the flow of the Nile River. The Nile flows from south to north, so the “upper” part is upstream (closer to the river’s source in Africa), while the “lower” part is downstream (where the river meets the Mediterranean Sea).
- Upper Egypt → Southern region (Luxor, Aswan, Abu Simbel)
- Lower Egypt → Northern region (Cairo, Alexandria, Nile Delta)
Egypt is famous for its ancient monuments – the Pyramids of Giza, the temples of Luxor and Karnak, and the Valley of the Kings – but also for the vibrant Red Sea coastline with world-class diving and snokeling spots.
Fun fact: More than 95% of Egyptians live along the Nile or in the Nile Delta, while most of the country is desert.
